Manx National Heritage has appealed the Planning Committee’s decision to approve an application for a statue of King Orry in St John’s.
The original application was submitted by President of Tynwald, Laurence Skelly.
In its appeal, MNH states the committee chose to “disregard the professional opinion and recommendations of Manx National Heritage and the Planning and Development Control Directorate of DEFA, which were grounded in policies set out in the Isle of Man Strategic Plan”.
The heritage body’s written submission argued the development has a “negative effect on the setting of a site of archaeological interest” and raised concerns about the “potential for damage to and disturbance of Tynwald Hill and its environs, which comprise one of the most important archaeological sites on the Isle of Man”.
It also noted the “omission of any kind of planning statement demonstrating how the applicant had considered the impact of the development on the surrounding environment”.
It had previously criticised the proposal, questioning the accuracy of the portrayal of King Orry.
