A planning officer has advised the island’s planning committee to reject a proposal to build a statue of King Orry near Tynwald Hill.
The application (PA25/90193/B), submitted by President of Tynwald Laurence Skelly, sought permission for an illuminated sculpture of Godred Crovan (“King Orry”) on a circular paved area opposite the historic site.
The refusal cites three key concerns, included that the sculpture would introduce a “visually assertive structure” that clashes with the “established character and symbolic clarity” of Tynwald Hill’s ceremonial landscape.
The report says: “The proposal risks undermining the visual and cultural primacy of the site.”
Horizontality
It also claims that the scale, verticality, and illumination would disrupt the “openness, horizontality, and visual coherence” of Tynwald Green.
Third, the site’s archaeological sensitivity was not fully assessed. While a geophysical survey was submitted, the report notes it “does not constitute a full archaeological evaluation,” leaving anomalies unverified.
Manx National Heritage and German Parish Commissioners both objected to the plans.
A final decision will be made at the Planning Committee meeting on July 28.
