Why Was Earystanes Chosen?

The chairman of Manx Utilities says Baldwin was ruled out as a place for an onshore windfarm based on deliverability and not cost.

John Wannenburgh was responding to a question from Jason Moorhouse about releasing documents on the controversial proposal for a windfarm at Earystane.

In his answer, Mr Wannenburgh stated that the figures from the initial business case were included in a presentation pack shared with Tynwald Members in July 2023.

A redacted version of this presentation is available on https://www.manxutilities.im/energy-transition/cair-vie-updates/ under July 2023 updates.

He confirmed that “the initial strategic business case was produced in May 2023” and that “no further business cases have been developed since and will only be developed once the design for the site is confirmed”.

Mr Wannenburgh said it had also been explained to all Tynwald Members that Baldwin site “had been ruled out on deliverability and not cost”.

He also noted the document has been published twice under Freedom of Information requests.
