His Majesty King Charles drew crowds on Douglas Promenade yesterday as he continued his visit to the Isle of Man, spending time at one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks, the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, during its 150th anniversary year.
The King met tramway staff, viewed the historic carriages and the shire horses that operate the route, and unveiled a plaque marking the milestone.
He then travelled a short distance along the prom on one of the horse trams, where well‑wishers gathered to greet him and capture the moment.
Among those watching was a visitor from Louisiana in the United States, who said the royal appearance had become an unexpected highlight of their trip. “We love it… people are amazing,” they told us, adding that the chance to see the King up close “just seems impossible… it’s great.”
Another spectator compared the experience to attending Trooping the Colour in London. “You’ve got to get there hours in advance even just to get on the same street,” they said. “Here you get a really good close‑up.”
Many said they came simply because the opportunity was too rare to miss. “I’ve always followed them, and it’s a great opportunity to see him. You don’t often get a chance like this,” one supporter told us.
King Charles’ visit to the tramway formed part of a wider programme of engagements across the island.
