If you have ventured outside this past month you will be very aware its been incredibly wet; but the question for us weather geeks, just how much rainfall has there been?
Thanks to the legends at the Met Office we have the stats, and hopefully they will make you realise you aren’t cynical or delusional – it really has been a very wet few months.
April, the month that made us all question getting an ark and never returning, has seen double its average rainfall at 104.4 mm compared to its 54.4 mm average, and these stats are based on only a third of the way through the month.
Rainfall stats
The Met Office’s stats shows we have had 42% more rain between January to the end of March than average.
Similarly the winter season (December to February) had 36% more rain than average.
March had nearly double the amount of rain than average with 116.9 mm compared to its 63 mm norm.
April will therefore be the fifth consecutive month with higher than average rainfall.
This year’s total rainfall to date beginning 1st January to April 11 is 403.5 mm.
The 1991-2020 statistics (covering a period of 30 years) for a one year average of rainfall is 884.8 mm.
Although we may believe we’ve nearly seen half of the years expected rainfall, statistically the winter months do comprise a higher percentage of the year’s annual total anyway.
Whilst it might seem this way on the face of it, it isn’t quite the truth of the matter, lets just hope for some dry weather now to settle the stats out – please weather Gods?
