Area Plan is ‘irresponsible’

Plans to zone over 100 acres of greenfield land on the outskirts of Peel for housing development have been labelled “massively concerning” and “irresponsible” by MHKs Kate Lord-Brennan and Tim Crookall.

The North & West Area Plan, due before Tynwald, could see between 417 and 720 new dwellings in Peel alone.

Critics argue this constitutes “urban sprawl” and contradicts government policy prioritising brownfield development.

“It’s laughable, really, but it’s serious,” said Ms Lord-Brennan, stating the plan “actively undermines” town centre regeneration. She warned the “big winners” are landowners and large developers, not public housing.

Mr Crookall highlighted severe infrastructure pressures, stating additional traffic would cause “chaos” on already congested routes.

“There’s absolutely no need for it,” he said, confirming he is trying to “persuade our colleagues… not to support this in Tynwald next week.”

Tynwald is due to vote on the Area Plan next week.
