Tynwald is to be asked to back a petition that would ban people living in the developments in the capital from gaining parking permits.
The petition of Andrea Krüger has attracted over 500 signatures and would be for disc zone H in Douglas.
The focus of the Ms Krüger’s petition is the new yet to be built Manx Development Corporation houses around Westmoreland Road, which a former minister said will not be able to get parking permits for nearby streets.
It says: “The aim of this petition is to stabilise, if not improve, the parking situation for the occupants of the existing dwellings in the already oversubscribed and regularly gridlocked Parking Disc Zone H in Douglas, by preventing the increase of property numbers eligible for
roadside residents parking permits.”
It will be presented to Tynwald by John Wannenburgh (Douglas North) at the January sitting.
Capacity
Planned using the controversial “20-minute neighbourhood” concept, the site will only have 89 parking spaces, despite the government’s own Strategic Plan specifying it should require 214.
The idea is that residents living there will walk everywhere or use public transport.
This has, naturally, led to residents of nearby streets concerned that their, already difficult to park on roads, will become even more over crowded.
Former DoI minister Tim Crookall told the Keys back in March: “Residents of the proposed Westmoreland Village will not be eligible for disc zone parking permits within parking zone H.
“The H zone is at capacity, and one of the key design drivers of the development is to encourage site users to choose alternative transport modes over single occupancy car use.”
When permission was granted for the plans, it was done so by the slimmest margin, with planning chairman Rob Callister MHK using his casting vote to ensure the scheme could go ahead.
At this time, it is still no known if the MDC owns all of the land it needs to build the plans on as at least one property owner has refused to sell.
