Port St Mary Commissioners has set a rate increase of 8.83% for the 2026/27 financial year.

The new rate will be 456 pence in the pound, a rise of 37 pence from the 2025/26 rate.

For a typical three-bedroom property with a garage, the authority states this represents an average increase of £44.03 per year, or 85p per week.

The board said the decision was “driven by multiple factors” including increased refuse costs, maintenance of public amenities, repairs to the Town Hall and a new wall at the Pavilion to comply with the equality act.

In a statement, the authority said: “Port St Mary Commissioners does not have the benefit of large commercial premises to bolster rate income like other authorities and are therefore more reliant on the domestic rates.”

It also cited uncertainty over the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2023, saying “the board do not feel it is prudent to utilise the limited reserves in this time of uncertainty”.
