Businesses across the island are encouraged to attend a meeting this evening to discuss the pressing challenges facing the island’s economy.
The Local Economy Forum has been set up following Tynwald’s decision to rise the minimum wage to nearly the highest in Europe.
The forum is open to all businesses that generate the larger part of their income on the island, or who export locally made products.
Lobby For Change
The emergency meeting will be held on this evening at 6:30pm at the Palace Hotel in Douglas.
The groups immediate aim is to highlight the destructive impacts of the government’s current policy and to propose an alternative, more effective way of increasing the income of lower-paid workers.
Beyond this, the group will be lobbying for political change to make the island less government-centric and more focussed on rebuilding an economy that has been in structural decline for many years.
Former MHK and government minister, Chris Robertshaw has been announced as the Chairman.
Chris has background in both business and politics and, with others, has concluded that there is a better way forward to ensure the right outcome for employees, businesses, and the overall economy than the one currently proposed by government.
