Douglas City Council has confirmed arrangements for a North Ward by‑election following the resignation of long‑serving Councillor Janet Thommeny.
Cllr Thommeny, a former Mayor, stepped down after ten years representing the ward. Originally trained as a nurse in Fife, she worked in mental health services in Dunfermline before moving to the island in 1990.
She was first elected in 2016, re‑elected in 2021 after topping the poll, and returned unopposed in 2023.
When appointed Mayor for 2022–23, she was described as a “hardworking, honest, caring member of the community.”
The Council has thanked her for her contribution and wished her well.
Nominations for the vacancy will open on June 10 and close on June 17 at 1pm. If more than one candidate comes forward, the by‑election will take place on July 16.
