Callister Drops Out of Chief Minister Race

Onchan MHK Rob Callister has announced he is dropping out of the race to be Chief Minister.

He said: “Over the past week, I have had the privilege of sharing my vision and policy proposals for the future of our island as part of my preparations to stand for the role of Chief Minister.

“While my proposals were warmly received by many businesses, charities and constituents, it has become clear that I do not have sufficient support within the new House of Keys to secure a nomination.

“As a result, I will not be putting my name forward for the position of Chief Minister.”

Only Candidate to Declare

Prior to today, Callister was the only MHK to publicly declare an interest and he issued a manifesto. But it came with the caveat that he would gauge support ahead of today’s deadline, before making a final decision.

Now he has decided to withdraw.

Other potential front runners who have been mooted for the position include the current Chief Minister Alfred Cannan, Deputy Chief MInister Jane Poole-Wilson and Treasury Minister Chris Thomas.

Health Minister Claire Christian, who many regard as not having been tainted as much as other members of the last administration, is seen as another option, while the possibility of a candidate coming from the 15 new MHKs elected last month has also been raised.

Disappointed

Announcing his decision to drop out of the race, Callister said: “Naturally, I am disappointed.

“However, I fully respect the democratic process and the decisions that elected Members must make.

“Standing for Chief Minister was never simply about seeking a title. It was about offering a clear vision, practical solutions and an ambitious but achievable programme for the Isle of Man.”

He said he remained “immensely proud” of the policy platform he developed.

“It focused on strengthening public services, growing our economy, delivering more homes, improving connectivity, reforming government and creating greater opportunities for future generations,” he added.

“The positive response it received from across our community gives me confidence that these priorities will continue to shape the national conversation in the years ahead.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who offered encouragement, advice and support throughout this process. Your confidence in me has meant a great deal, and I am deeply grateful for the many messages, conversations and expressions of goodwill I have received.”

Public Service

Callister said his commitment to public service was unchanged.

“Over the past decade, I have always believed that public service is judged not by the position you hold, but by the difference you make. My focus remains exactly as it has always been: working hard, delivering results, and helping to build a stronger future for the Isle of Man.”

Potential Chief Minister candidates have until noon today (October 6) to submit their nomination and policy proposals.

Details of candidates will be released publicly later this afternoon.
