Calls for upgraded protections for Manx banking customers

The Manx TaxPayers’ Alliance is calling on the Isle of Man Government to upgrade protections for Manx banking customers to protect the people of the Isle of Man from ‘debanking’.

It says that the UK Government has proposed upgraded protections for customers of British banks.

The Manx TaxPayers’ Alliance thinks that equivalent protections should be introduced to the Isle of Man.

It says ‘especially given the relatively smaller size of our economy, and the importance that banking services have in our community’.

The Manx TaxPayers’ Alliance

The Manx TaxPayers’ Alliance’s stance is ‘unambiguous’. It says the people of the Isle of Man should not lose access to bank accounts or other payment services for arbitrary and unreviewable reasons.

The alliance is calling upon the Isle of Man Government to upgrade Manx protections to at least the same level that British banking customers will soon enjoy.

It says that ‘given that Isle of Man banks are typically part of groups with significant operations in the United Kingdom, the cost of complying with such regulations in the Isle of Man is likely to be trivial: just upgrade Manx rules to the same levels as the United Kingdom’.

Banking customers

The alliance says that the ‘cornerstone of the British amendments is the prohibition against terminating payment services based on a customer’s political or other opinions.

‘In the Isle of Man, adopting similar regulations would safeguard individuals’ rights to free expression, ensuring that their financial services cannot be arbitrarily discontinued.

‘This is particularly important in the Isle of Man due to the smaller market size: customers have less choice than in the United Kingdom or larger jurisdictions.’

The proposed amendments stipulate a 90-day notice period for service termination, up from the current two months.

Additionally, service providers must offer a detailed and specific rationale for contract termination.

It says that ‘this transparency and extended notice period would provide Manx individuals and businesses ample time to seek alternative services, reducing potential financial disruption’.
