Musicians are being offered a rare opportunity to play a 100-year-old instrument that weighs 10 tonnes and has 754 individually tuned pipes at an Isle of Man Arts Council event next month.
The Mighty Wurlitzer based in the Villa Marina Arcade in Douglas has links to a similar organ located in the world famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Local musicians can pre-book a 30 minute slot to play the rare instrument at the open day on 21 May.
The Mighty Wurlitzer was built in the USA in 1929. It was purchased by the Isle of Man Government 60 years later and used to entertain tourists at Summerland until its closure, before taking up home at the Douglas arcade.
Chair of the Isle of Man Arts Council, Sarah Maltby MHK said: ‘The aim of inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy culture and the arts is a key ambition within the National Development Strategy for Culture and the Arts, and we hope the Wurlitzer Open Day will spark a new generation of players.’
