Ramsey Rugby Club has announced it will not be entering the English Clubs Championship for the 2026–27 season, citing travel costs exceeding £100,000.
The decision follows confirmation that 14 teams intended to enter the league, which has a maximum size of 12 teams. While the club initially expected the competition to be split into two smaller leagues, the majority of clubs preferred a single larger league. The RFU subsequently granted permission for a 14-team league on a one-season trial basis.
However, the RFU’s Community Game Board decided against increasing travel funding beyond inflation adjustments. Ramsey would have been required to fund all their own travel and cover visiting teams’ costs, including transfers between the airport and the club.
Based on 2025–26 costs, this would amount to just over £100,000, with potential ferry travel savings limited to approximately £10,000.
“Quite simply, as a club we do not have the resources to meet these costs, nor any realistic prospect of securing the required funding in time for next season,” the club stated. “As a result, we have been left with no option but to withdraw from the English Clubs Championship for 2026–27.”
The club is actively pursuing funding opportunities and hopes to return for the 2027–28 season.
In the meantime, Ramsey will focus on the Manx Shield, Manx Cup, Cheshire competitions, and additional friendlies.
