Castletown Commissioners say businesses in the town should use ‘proper channels’ to dispose of their waste.
Chair Beth Cannan says leaving it in public litter bins means ratepayers are subsidising the cost.
The reminder has been sparked by a post on social media which shows a pile of rubbish bags left next to a litter bin on Bank Street.
Services to Businesses
Castletown Commissioners says commercial refuse accounts for a ‘significant portion’ of the town’s aged debt.
But the local authority says it may have to consider ‘alternative mechanisms’ for providing waste services to businesses.
It adds that most of the companies use a private contractor and that refuse services are not covered by the rates paid on commercial properties.
The chair says she would ‘encourage’ any business in the town that is struggling to pay for waste services to contact the local authority.
Domestic Waste
She says the costs at the energy from waste plant are charged by weight with domestic waste costing £113.00 per tonne and commercial waste £224.96 per tonne.
Ms Cannan adds that the commissioners have ‘endeavoured’ to support businesses during ‘challenging times’ but the board might have to adopt a more robust approach.
At this time the local authority says it believes it’s a nuisance rather than a ‘significant issue’.
In the most recent instance she confirmed the business has been contacted and asked to stop leaving waste in normal bins.
The local authority has made assurances that it will continue to make efforts to identify and return, or recharge, businesses who use domestic bins where appropriate.
