Cops: Stop Cycling on Pavements

Following reports of near misses police have issued a warning to cyclists that it is illegal to cycle on pavements.

The alert comes after an incident in Peel where a school-aged child was nearly struck by a cyclist while stepping out of their garden gate.

The Roads Policing Unit issued a reminder that people cycling on pavements is illegal unless the path is designated as a cycle route.

“Please have a bit of respect. It is illegal to ride on the pavement if not designated as a cycle route,” they said.

The message was directed at responsible cyclists, with police acknowledging that most riders follow the rules. “This is probably common sense to the majority of the people who cycle on our road networks daily and as cyclists ourselves this post is only intended to raise awareness,” the statement added.
