Firefighters battled a well-developed gorse blaze near the Point of Ayre last night, faced with challenging water supplies.
Two major appliances from Ramsey Fire Station were called at approximately 9:40pm where crews found flames rapidly spreading through gorse and surrounding vegetation.
“Maintaining water supplies at the location proved challenging,” a fire service spokesperson said. A Water Bowser from Douglas Fire Station was mobilised to supplement supplies.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and spent two hours damping down to reduce re-ignition risk.
Crash
In a separate incident shortly afterwards, crews from Castletown and Malew Fire Station responded to a single-vehicle road traffic collision near Joey’s Corner on the Southern 100 course.
On arrival, firefighters found the vehicle had rolled several times before coming to rest.
Crews provided emergency care to occupants before paramedics arrived and made the vehicle safe.
With warmer, drier weather forecast, the fire service urged the public to avoid discarding cigarettes or matches in the countryside, lighting campfires or disposable barbecues near dry vegetation, and parking on long dry grass.
