Douglas City Council has confirmed that its annual fireworks display will go ahead in its traditional format in 2026, following careful consideration of alternative options.
The local authority had explored the possibility of introducing a low-noise display as part of its ongoing commitment to reviewing public events and responding to community feedback.
However, after receiving professional advice, councillors agreed that the established format remains the most appropriate option.
Traditional Format
Although the Council’s current fireworks provider confirmed that a low-noise display could be delivered at no additional cost, they advised against moving away from the traditional approach.
This recommendation was supported by a detailed written submission, which was considered by councillors as part of the decision-making process.
Members also highlighted the wider community benefits of maintaining a central, organised display.
It was noted that the city’s official fireworks event plays an important role in discouraging multiple private displays across residential areas, which are often cited as the main cause of distress to residents and pets.
Balanced Approach
Chair of the Regeneration and Community Committee, Councillor Natalie Byron-Teare, said the decision reflected a balanced and responsible approach.
“We have long recognised that fireworks attract differing views, which is why we considered switching to a low-noise display this year,” she said.
“Ultimately it was agreed that the display we currently operate remains the most effective and responsible approach, reflecting a careful balance between community enjoyment, public safety and minimising wider disruption.
“We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors once again to this popular event in November.”
