The Department for Enterprise has clarified that political attendance at motorsport events is invitation led, after questions were raised about representation at recent events.
A spokesperson said political members attend events “at their own discretion”, with each invitation considered on a case‑by‑case basis depending on diary pressures and wider commitments.
In the case of the Manx National Rally, the Department confirmed that neither Sarah Maltby MHK, the political member with responsibility for Motorsport and Visit Isle of Man, nor Visit Isle of Man officers attended in an official capacity because no invitation was received.
This was despite the event estimating a contribution of more than £2 million to the island’s circular economy.
DfE said its engagement with Manx Auto Sport is ongoing, with officers meeting the organisation earlier this week to discuss longer‑term planning and to recognise the value of its events.
By contrast, Mrs Maltby and Rob Mercer MLC, political member for Business Isle of Man, did attend the Andreas Racing Association meeting on the same weekend as the rally, having been invited.
The Department also restated the remit of its Motorsport division, which promotes the TT and Classic TT and supports the Manx Grand Prix and Southern 100.
Visit Isle of Man continues to assist a range of motorsport‑related events through the Tourist Event Development Scheme, including Trials des Nations, Enduros, Rally Isle of Man and several trials events.
