Farmers Mental Health Group Launched

The Manx National Farmers Union has launched its own mental health and wellbeing support group, Greener Grass.

The support group is all about farmers understanding farmers, and raising awareness that ‘it’s okay to not be okay‘.

Recently six members of the Manx National Farmers Union took part in a Mental Health First Aid course with Isle Listen.

On the back of this, the Greener Grass Campaign was launched this week with the hopes of encouraging those who may be struggling to reach out.

MNFU General Secretary Sarah Comish and Assistant General Secretary Carolyn Lace spoke to Charlie Morrey about the importance of the campaign:

In the UK it has been reported that 95% of farmers under the age of 40 rank poor mental health as one of the biggest hidden problems facing farmers.

While, the latest Office of National Statistics figures showed 36 suicides were registered in England and Wales among the farming and agricultural industry in 202.

RABI’s Big Farming Survey conducted in 2021 has revealed that 36% of farmers in the UK are probably or possibly depressed, while 47% are constantly struggling with anxiety.

Mental Health Group

One of the mental health first aiders, Sam Morrey explained that the isolating conditions of farming can often lead to farmers being left with their own thoughts at times of stress.

Sam explained the struggles that are facing farmers, why they may have not reached out in the past and why the group is fundamental in helping farmers:

He says that getting past yourself and reaching for help is the first step, a message that was echoed by fellow mental health first aider Carol Kennaugh:

For those who may be struggling you can contact any of the Mental Health First Aiders by phone or email.

You can also contact the MNFU who will signpost you to further help.
