Fire Crews Battle Wildfire

Over 15 firefighters from Douglas responded to a wildfire at Greeba this afternoon, preventing its further spread.

At the same time, crews from Rushen were dealing with a railway embankment fire.

The Emergency Services Joint Control Room mobilised crews after reports of the Greeba blaze.

Firefighters used high-pressure hose reels and 45mm jets to contain the flames, supported by a closed-circuit water relay system to maintain water supply.

Crews remained on scene for around two hours damping down hotspots.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service (IOMFRS) warned: “Grass fires spread very fast—if you see dry grass smouldering, call 999 immediately.”

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) and IOMFRS urged the public to act responsibly, asking people to “avoid barbecues, campfires, and careless disposal of cigarettes or litter, as these can easily trigger wildfires”.
