A fire in a flue of a house has sparked the fire service to issue advice on those using log burners this winter.
Shortly after 3pm on Tuesday (October 7), crews from Rushen and Castletown stations were called to reports of a structure fire at a property in Port Erin.
The first crew on scene discovered that a small fire was confined to the flue of a log burner and were able to quickly extinguish the hot spots within the flue.
Fire crews were in attendance for approximately 30 minutes.

The fire service encourages anyone considering lighting up their log burners to make sure they are well prepared and follow the below advice:
- Have your chimney swept regularly by a professional, at least once a year.
- Only burn the right fuel: Use seasoned wood, approved smokeless fuel, or the correct fuel for your appliance.
- Use a fireguard and spark guard to protect from embers.
- Always fully extinguish fires before bed or leaving the house.
- Fit smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors – test them weekly
