An extremely successful weekend for Fiona Whitehead at the European Masters League, where she won two gold medals in field events in the women’s 55 age group.
A relatively recent resident who moved to the Isle of Man in 2024, Fiona who now represents IOM Veteran AC, has already made a big impression on the local athletics scene.
She first claimed gold in the women’s throws pentathlon on Saturday (May 30), before doubling her tally the following day with victory in the individual hammer throw.
The throws pentathlon comprises the traditional four throwing events, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, plus the weight throw.
The weight is somewhat similar to the hammer, but uses a much shorter chain. Fiona produced a series of consistently strong performances across all five disciplines to achieve a winning score of 2,854 points, finishing 194 points clear of her nearest competitor in the W55 category.
In Sunday’s (May 31) individual hammer competition, Fiona again demonstrated impressive consistency, with three of her six throws exceeding 39 metres. Her best effort of 40.10 metres was enough to secure her second gold medal of the weekend by a margin of nearly six metres.
A highly experienced athlete, Fiona recently played a significant role for Team Isle of Man in the opening round of the Northern League. Congratulations Fiona on an outstanding weekend of competition in London.
