The average GP appointment has increased from 11.7 minutes to 17.7 minutes over the last 10 years.
Health Minister Claire Christian provided the figure in response to a question from Kate Lord-Brennan.
In a written answer, the Minister stated that this 51% rise reflects “the evolving clinical complexity and changing patient needs.”
She confirmed that policy on appointment length is guided by British Medical Association recommendations, which “advise practices to move towards 15-minute appointments to ensure safe and effective care delivery”.
Ms Christian revealed a significant increase in patients with multiple conditions, noting those with three or more chronic conditions rose by 31% and those with six or more by 71% between 2019 and 2025.
She added: “GP services in 2025 are supporting 3% more patients than in 2015, with longer and more comprehensive consultations taking place. The number of GPs providing services has remained consistent over this period.”
