Guernsey Selects First Female Chief

Lindsay de Sausmarez has been elected as the new President of the Policy & Resources Committee.

The role is Guernsey’s equivalent of Chief Minister.

She received 22 votes from States Members – ahead of Deputy Mark Helyar with 11 votes, and Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq with seven.

The BBC reported that as part of her pitch for the job she promised to review the island’s tax system before the end of the year.

Speaking after the result to ITV, she said: “The message was clear from the electorate. They wanted to see the end of the divisiveness and the tribalism that had marred the last assembly.

“We do have to look at things again, but we need to ensure that the process is quick and efficient because we really need some certainty and we really need to get our fiscal balance.”

It is the second time a Crown Dependency has been led by a woman, after Kristina Moore served for just over 18 months in Jersey.
