The Department of Environment, Food, and Agriculture has launched a campaign to raise awareness of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) following outbreaks in Europe.
With thousands of TT visitors arriving from the EU, the government has imposed strict restrictions to protect the island’s livestock.
Dr Amy Beckett, the Isle of Man’s Chief Veterinary Officer, told Manx.News: “We’re obviously concerned the fact that foot and mouth disease has popped up in Europe again.
“It’s a devastating disease that affects cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats, causing serious welfare concerns and financial loss. We want to do everything we can to keep it off the Isle of Man.”

Import bans are now in place for susceptible animals from Europe and Great Britain, alongside tightened controls on semen, embryos, and meat products.
Visitors are urged not to bring personal food items. “I’m asking those from Europe not to fetch their own food—buy Manx food here,” Dr Beckett said.
Processed meats and dairy products still pose a risk, as the virus can survive in improperly treated items.
“If you’re out in the countryside, dispose of food in bins away from livestock,” Dr Beckett stressed. “Even a discarded sausage could infect animals.”
FMD poses no risk to humans but could devastate the island’s farming industry. “It causes horrific ulcers, lameness, and may require mass culling,” Dr Beckett added. “The financial impact would be severe.”
