Manx cyclist Lizzie Holden has announced that her upcoming return to racing will mark the final chapter of her professional career.
The announcement comes after a difficult period for the former British time trial champion, which included a serious crash resulting in a broken collarbone, multiple broken ribs, and a punctured lung.
In an Instagram post, Holden confirmed her retirement plans.
She wrote: “Well, a little earlier than expected to be back racing… but I was extra motivated (stubborn) for this comeback, as it will also mark the end of my cycling career.”
Grateful
Reflecting on her career, she expressed gratitude for her time in the sport. “I’ll be forever grateful for having been able to call cycling my ‘job’ for so many years,” she stated.
Holden paid a special tribute to those who supported her journey, singling out coach Dot Tilbury and her family.
She said: “The biggest thank you to the Manx legend, Dot Tilbury, for everything she has done for IOM cycling and getting myself and so many other involved and enjoying cycling.
“Of course, to my parents, my biggest supporters from day one. Living on an island added it’s extra difficulties, one being so much extra time travelling to races each weekend, and I truly wouldn’t have been able to reach where I am without them.
“Lastly, to my husband who I found along the way, who’s seen me at the lows & the highs of the sport and stuck with me through it all.”
