After an illustrious 42-year career, road racing legend Ian Lougher has formally announced his retirement from competitive racing.
The Welshman’s name is permanently etched in Isle of Man TT history, with 10 victories, 29 podiums, and over 136 TT race starts.
His achievements extend to the Classic TT, where he most recently secured a podium in the 2025 Lightweight race.
Lougher’s journey began on the Mountain Course in 1983 at the Manx Grand Prix, while his first TT win came in a dramatic 1990 Junior TT, where he set a new lap record.

While stepping away from the leathers, his connection to the sport continues through his role as team owner and manager of ILR Racing, where he will guide future talent.
Reflecting on his decision, Lougher said: “Forty-four seasons is a long, long time to still be racing, isn’t it! I’ve been thinking about retirement for quite a while, but kept it to myself. I’ve always said I’d keep racing as long as I was competitive, and I like to think I’ve managed that.”
He added: “I’m 62 now, and while I still don’t get nervous going through the bottom of Bray Hill at 140mph, you can’t go on forever. With ILR Racing, I’ll still have my hand in – maybe even the odd few laps in the name of testing – but now it’s time to focus on the next generation.”
