How Garff Treatment Works Will Look

Aerial views of Garff sewage network plans

Manx Utilities’ plans for a new sewage treatment network to serve Laxey and Baldrine, have now been published in full.

The proposals include a treatment works at Axnfell Plantation, five pumping stations, and associated pipelines.

The move comes after a previous application for a treatment plant at The Cairns in Laxey was refused in 2020.

Public exhibitions held in November 2024 saw over 130 attendees, with 73 providing feedback.

Opinions were mixed; 36.99% of respondents supported the plans, while 45.21% were unsupportive.

Concerns

Key concerns included construction traffic, noise, and visual impact.

Manx Utilities addressed these, noting: “Landscaping and screening will form part of the Environmental Impact Assessment,” and confirming that operational vehicle visits would be minimal.

The utility says the scheme is essential to stop “raw sewage being pumped into the Irish Sea” and to meet government environmental objectives.

A final decision rests with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.
