Icons of Manx History and Culture Celebrated

Tynwald has unanimously approved the addition of Sophia Morrison (1859-1917) and Annie Bridson (1893-1985) to the Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour.

Juan Watterson, Chair of the Tynwald Management Committee, proposed the motion stating: “Sophia Morrison was a trailblazer in the revival and preservation of Manx language and culture.

“She devoted her life to recording our folklore, promoting Gaelic, and publishing works such as Manx Fairy Tales. Her legacy continues to inspire cultural revival across the island.”

He added: “Annie Bridson was undeniably a woman ahead of her time as the second woman elected to the House of keys and the first female president of the Manx Labour Party.

“She was a long time advocate for education, social justice and women’s rights. she championed better housing, family planning services and the rights of children and the elderly.

“She approached every debate with compassion and conviction. She never shied away from championing or challenging the status quo.

“Her roles as a teacher, a Unionist, a Unionist, wartime officer, a parliamentarian, reflect a life of service ground in empathy and courage.”
