Impact of Wage Rise on Freight Costs Questioned

The Treasury Minister has been asked to clarify whether recent increases in Steam Packet freight costs are linked to the scheduled rise in the minimum wage.

The question has been tabled by Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan who is seeking details on the scale of the freight cost increase and the extent to which higher wage costs may be a contributing factor.

In her written question, which is due for answer on February 3, Ms Lord-Brennan asks the Treasury Minister Chris Thomas MHK to outline what the recent increase in Steam Packet freight charges amounts to, and how much of that increase is attributable to the planned uplift in the minimum wage.

Freight costs are a key issue for businesses and consumers on the Isle of Man, with increases often feeding through to higher prices across the economy.
