Politicians have defended the model for student work experience, which has shifted from a universal offer to targeted placements.
Appearing before a Youth Select Committee, Minister Daphne Caine outlined the approach “is very much now a bespoke [programme] tailored to the individual”.
The department cited difficulties in securing placements and employer capacity as key reasons for the change.
Political Member Paul Craine MLC explained: “Work placements are actually in finite supply.”
While Sarah Maltby acknowledged the practical challenges for businesses, noting: “For some businesses, that just might not be something that they’re able to do at the moment.”
Officials emphasised that bespoke placements, alongside alternative employability events, ensure experiences are “meaningful” and that students remain “safe within the work experience setting”.
