Knox Inspired Concert

Yn Chruinnaght, Celtic Gathering will host a Archibald Knox inspired concert with harpist Rachel Hair and acoustic guitarist Ron Jappy.

The concert will take place on Friday, July 25 at the Royal Chapel in St John’s.

Rachel will lead a performance of “The Deer’s Cry”, an 8-minute suite she originally composed and arranged in 2015 for Culture Vannin to celebrate Archibald Knox’s 150th anniversary.

Knox Inspired

Last performed by Rachel alongside Manx harpists Mera Royle and Amy Stout, this newly expanded 2025 version features Rachel and Claasagh, an impressive ensemble of 10 young Manx harpists.

“The Deer’s Cry” suite includes four evocative sections:

  • Cymric Silver, inspired by Knox’s contributions to Liberty of London’s silver collection.
  • Knox’s Jig, a lively dance celebrating his creative spirit.
  • The Deer’s Cry, the spiritual heart of the suite.
  • The Ghost Designer, named to reflect Knox’s anonymity during his time with Liberty.

Celtic Gathering

Rachel Hair said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have The Deer’s Cry performed at the Celtic Gathering as part of Isle of Knox 2025.

“I’m thrilled that this time round it will be five times as many Manx harpers as at its premiere. It really shows how much harping is thriving on the Isle of Man.

“It’s also such a joy to perform my own music on the Isle of Man, with the brilliant Ron Jappy and a great opportunity to inspire my students by sharing the stage with him.

“I’m really looking forward to staying on at the festival, enjoying the concerts, and of course joining in the many trad sessions that will no doubt be happening around Peel!”
