England’s LX Over 65s hockey team clinched the gold medal at the IMC World Cup in Auckland, with the Isle of Man’s own Lesley Shimmin playing a vital role.
The team triumphed in the final with a convincing 2-0 victory, capping off a gruelling week of competition with six matches played in just seven days.
Lesley, a dedicated and experienced hockey player, only joined the prestigious LX Club in 2023 but has quickly become an integral part of its success.
Her journey began when she represented the North West in the England Hockey Regional Tournament, which paved the way for her inclusion in the LX Club—a unique organisation established in 1995 to provide competitive opportunities for players aged 60 and over.
Lesley’s international journey with the LX Club began with the European Cup in Bra, Italy, in 2023. She went on to represent the team in Tilburg and The Hague earlier in 2024. Her performances on the field earned her a spot on the squad for the World Cup in Auckland, where her determination and skill shone through on the global stage.
The tournament was an intense test of endurance and teamwork, but the England LX 65s rose to the challenge. Their final match showcased their exceptional coordination and resilience, culminating in a well-deserved gold medal victory. Lesley expressed her delight at both the team’s success and her own contribution, saying, “It’s been an incredible experience to compete at this level and to bring home gold. The camaraderie and support within the team have been amazing.”
The achievement is not only a personal milestone for Lesley but also a proud moment for the Isle of Man. Her success highlights the opportunities available for senior players to continue excelling in competitive hockey on an international stage.
The LX Club’s dedication to fostering lifelong involvement in hockey is evident in stories like Shimmin’s. From its founding in 1995, the organisation has grown into a hub for senior players to compete, travel, and build lasting friendships through sport.
Lesley’s gold medal adds another layer of prestige to the Isle of Man’s sporting legacy and inspires others to pursue their passions regardless of age. Congratulations to Lesley Shimmin and the England LX 65s for their outstanding achievement!
