A Douglas man has been fined after he admitted assaulting a police officer and causing criminal damage.
Matthew Prendergast, of Marathon Road, appeared before magistrates on Thursday.
Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court Prendergast had been arrested for another matter, which was later dropped, and taken into custody.
At about 3.25pm on Wednesday July 24 he was served a hot meal which he proceeded to throw on the wall.
After the cell was cleaned, Prendergast was being escorted back when he threw a cup of water over a police sergeant.
The court heard the sergeant was not injured by the cup of water.
His advocate Helen Lobb said the case was a “straightforward matter” and one which her client, who was drunk at the time, wanted to apologise for, having already apologised to the officer involved.
Magistrates fined him £200 for the assault, £100 for the damage, £150 for cleaning the cell and ordered him to pay £25 costs.
They accepted his offer to pay it at the rate of £10 per week from benefits until he is able to return to work after a shoulder injury prevented him from maintaining employment.
The chairwoman told Prendergast: “This was likely the most expensive meal you’ve ever had in your life.”
