Manx Care Sets Out Medicinal Cannabis Rules

Manx Care has clarified how prescribed medicinal cannabis will be managed for patients admitted to Noble’s Hospital.

Patients prescribed licensed cannabis-based medicines by NHS specialists may continue their treatment while in hospital.

However, those with private prescriptions must bring their own medication for use during their stay.

In certain cases, other prescribed cannabis-based products may also be continued “if it is safe and appropriate”.

Secure

All cannabis-based medicines brought into hospital are “securely stored and carefully monitored” by healthcare staff while clinical teams will review each patient’s treatment and may “adjust or stop it if needed for safety”.

Smoking, vaping, or preparing cannabis as a tea is “not allowed due to safety and public health reasons”.

A Manx Care post said: “This approach supports patients to continue appropriate treatment while maintaining a safe environment for everyone at Noble’s Hospital.”

The guidance brings the island in line with existing UK practice on hospital-based medicinal cannabis use.
