MDC Wants to Build Multi-Storey Car Park

The Manx Development Corporation wants to build a new multi-storey car park and associated facilities at Parade Street, Douglas.

That is the car park behind the Imperial Buildings where the Steam Packet is.

None of the plans for the redevelopment of the Parade Street car park site include any physical works to the current Sea Terminal building.

Dane Harrop, Managing Director commented: “Following a pause of works to reassess the final scope, the Manx Development Corporation have now re-engaged its design team with a view to lodging a planning application for the Parade Street Car Park site in the first half of 2025.

Design

“To date the project has included extensive stakeholder consultation with those associated with adjacent sites, the highways department and those running the port to ensure that what is being proposed is considered and coordinated.

“This engagement will continue as the design progresses into the next phase.

“Often initial investment in enabling infrastructure is required to facilitate wider redevelopment of an urban area, and it is envisaged that the provision of this multi-storey car park will be a decisive move to reinvigorate the surrounding area by helping to enable regeneration in the city.”

There is no indication of what the cost for the building would be or how the taxpayer owned company would fund it. However, it does say the proposal is “in collaboration with its shareholder IOM Treasury”.
