A decision to close schools for only half a day due to snow and ice is being questioned in next week’s House of Keys sitting.
On Monday (January 5) the controversial decision was made for schools to be shut until 12pm, before a later announcement that they would be shut for the full day.
There was some criticism on social media about the delayed announcement on Monday and the decision to possibly open later in the day.
Half Day Closure
Education Minister Daphne Caine MHK is set to answer numerous questions from several MHKs regarding the decision making process.
Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK, Tim Glover will question what the process was in deciding to keep schools closed for the morning and why the announcement was late.
Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper will ask what the policy and procedures are for closing schools due to adverse weather, who makes the decision, what factors are considered and how each is weighted.
He will also ask the Minister to make a statement on the matter.
Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse would like to know what factors led to delayed and staged updates on school opening on Monday.
Whilst Onchan MHK Julie Edge wants to know what the decision process was regarding school closures and whether Minister Caine will make a statement.
The House of Keys will sit for the first time in 2026 on Tuesday (January 13) next week.
