Minister Pledges Improvements to Comms

Health Minister Claire Christian has pledged to improve communication following a petition on breast screening frequency that garnered significant public support.

The petition, brought forward by the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group, highlighted concerns over the island’s cancer screening services amid concerns they would be cut back.

In Tynwald this week Ms Christian acknowledged the need for better engagement after the way the issue was communicated by the government received criticism both

She said: “I do acknowledge that communication and engagement are paramount, and we can do better. I will do better.”

The minister confirmed that she and the Cabinet Office Minister had met with representatives from the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group last Friday, reaching “positive and reassuring conclusions for all parties.”

The Public Health team is now reviewing all screening programmes to ensure they meet the clinical needs of the Manx public, with any proposed changes to involve consultation with stakeholders.

However politicians said it was more than regrettable that the matter happened in the way that it did and required over 2,500 people to sign a petition demanding that reductions aren’t made.
