Motiv8 has gone from strength to strength supporting our island with recovery from dependency since 1978 and today (January 12) has launched its new Family and Friends Support Group.
The groups will be held on Fridays (starting today) from 12:30-1:30pm by two of Motiv8’s trained counsellors Louise and Tiffany and will work with the SMART programme (Self-Management and Recovery Training).
For every person with a substance dependency there are those that are directly impacted, whether that be as a parent, sibling, child, partner, friend, greater family members and more.
During a survey carried out by Motiv8 back in 2005 it was identified that up to a 1⁄4 of the island’s population each year (a staggering 21,177 people based on 2023’s recorded population) could be impacted by someone else’s dependency to Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling or Gaming.
Support group
The need for the support is growing because more people are reaching out, therefore using its Group Hub facilities in Douglas, it is adding a free and confidential weekly support group for Family and Friends.
Motiv8 currently offers one-to-one counselling to those impacted by someone they care about who has a dependency.

“It gives them a voice, knowing that they are safe to talk in the group setting and that they can help themselves and the person that they are concerned about.

“We are constantly adapting to an ever-changing landscape, and this is just another step to being able to support more people and to make sure that people know that there is positive help out there.”
Addiction professional and groupwork programme lead, Louise McColgan, said she’s been running the groupwork programme for over 10 years and has seen the number of people attending steadily rise over this time.

Thea added: “We know that it’s daunting for anyone to take that first step for support with any dependency but in the last 12 months 678 people did just that; in the same year we had 5052 pairs of feet across the threshold.
“We have a team of 12 counsellors, 6 peer mentors who support our work and help people travelling their own path of recovery.”
