The Mountain Road will not close at the end of this week as planned.
Works elsewhere on the TT Course are taking longer than intended, so the A18 will now close next week instead, for a period of up to four weeks.
The DoI said that work to expand and improve the surface water drainage system between Glen Helen and Sarah’s Cottage on the Ballacraine to Kirk Michael Road is at an advanced stage.
However, it added: “The ground immediately below the road construction is bedrock, which has thrown up its own particular challenges when excavating new channels for longitudinal and lateral culverts and associated access chambers.
“Additionally a number of uncharted drains and culverts have required maintenance works therefore the planned work has taken longer than first anticipated and has led to our teams working extended hours in order to press on with the scheme.
“We had hoped to complete resurfacing works over the coming weekend, but predicted adverse weather is likely to prevent this.
“The closure will now be extended into next week. We are now predicting that works will be completed and the road reopened by Tuesday evening.”
As a consequence of the extension of the closure through Glen Helen, the planned closure of the southern section of the A18 Mountain Road for drainage and carriageway improvements will now not be put in place until 9:30am on Wednesday April 3.
The Mountain Road will shut for up to four weeks between the Bungalow and Creg Ny Baa.
