The ManxSPCA says its staff “tried desperately” to prevent Charlie, a young American XL Bully-type dog, from being euthanised.
The dog was put down following legal proceedings linked to his illegal importation to the island.
Charlie went into the charity’s care in November 2024 after being seized by the Police with the MSPCA saying he displayed a “gentle and loving nature” during his time with them, despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
IThe charity said: “We worked tirelessly to seek alternatives to this devastating outcome. We made formal representations to DEFA, requesting a retrospective import licence for Charlie, and explored every possible legal avenue to save him.
“Regrettably, the current legal framework provided no path that would allow Charlie to remain safely and lawfully on the island.”
Principles
The MSPCA emphasised that one of its core principles is never euthanising a healthy animal. “In Charlie’s case, the matter was taken out of our hands,” they said.
“While we understand that the law must be upheld, we believe it is vital to acknowledge the tragedy at the heart of this situation: that a dog paid the ultimate price for human error.”
The charity warned that bull-breed puppies bought off-island may later be identified as XL Bully-types, even if sold as Staffordshire crosses or mastiffs, and could face the same legal consequences.
