David Mullarkey’s latest 5k race time was almost a 10 second improvement on his previous personal best (PB) set last year.
When you are slightly disappointed with an indoor 5,000 metres time of 13:28.23, you are a pretty special athlete!
The athlete took to social media saying: “The goalposts have moved from where they were a year ago. 13:28 5k but left wanting more.”
That was the latest fantastic performance by Mullarkey (number 2301) in the colours of Florida State University (FSU) at last Saturday’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston.

Isle of Man Commonwealth Games athlete David Mullarkey achieved yet another stunning performance earlier in the year, in the colours of Florida State University, clocking an indoor 3,000 metres time of 7:42.89.
That was more than 10 seconds faster than the personal best time he posted several weeks ago, and if I understand correctly from the College Instagram post it is a new FSU record.
It places him second on the UK rankings list so far for 2024, four seconds behind Jack Rowe who won the race.
Commonwealth PB
In 2022, Mullarkey set a new Isle of Man record in the Men’s 500m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The then 22-year-old broke the previous record by 3.23secs.
He delivered a time of 13:43:92 to a packed out Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Mullarkey finished 12th.
