A new Captain of the Parish of Michael has been sworn in at Government House, succeeding her father who served in the role for 55 years.

Chrissy Cannell was formally invested with the insignia of office in a ceremony presided over by the Lieutenant Governor.

The ancient office, first recorded in 1626 and rooted in the Norse “Watch and Ward” system, once involved organising local militias. Today it carries ceremonial and civic duties, including attendance at constitutional occasions and supporting parish electoral processes.

Miss Cannell, a lifelong resident of Michael, takes over following the resignation of her father, Mr John Cannell CP, who served the parish since 1970.

In her address, Miss Cannell paid warm tribute to her father and acknowledged the example he has set in his many years of dedicated service to the parish.

Miss Cannell has been heavily involved with Michael Players and was awarded the Yn Gliggyr award by Michael Commissioners for her services to Manx Culture.
