No PFAS Bans Planned

The government has confirmed it is not preparing to ban per and polyfluoroalkyl substances in either paper‑based food packaging or pesticides.

In response to two questions from Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood, the Environment Minister said the island will continue to follow the UK’s position.

Responding to the first question, Minister Clare Barber MHK said PFAS are not currently banned in food‑contact packaging in the UK or the Isle of Man.

She said the UK Government is still assessing scientific evidence on PFAS and their potential risks, including in food and packaging. While the EU is moving toward restrictions, the Island will stay aligned with the UK to protect market access.

For now, there are no plans for a Manx‑specific ban, though DEFA will keep international developments under review.

Evidence-based Approach

In a separate written question, Dr Haywood asked whether DEFA intends to ban pesticides containing PFAS.

Minister Barber said there is no specific ban in the UK or the Isle of Man, and highlighted the UK’s 2026 PFAS Plan, which focuses on monitoring, research and a proportionate, evidence‑led approach rather than immediate restrictions.

Any future action would depend on scientific evidence and the availability of alternatives. As with packaging, the island will maintain alignment with the UK unless the UK or EU changes course.
