Manx Care has no concerns over the number of dentists due to retire, but contracting salaried staff remains a challenge, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.
The figures were disclosed in response to a question from Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh.
Health Minister Claire Christian provided the breakdown, stating: “Assuming a retirement age of 65, four (9%) of the 43 dentists currently delivering NHS services are of retirement age or over, and a further four (9%) are within five years of retirement.”
However, she noted that 56% of dentists are under 50, adding: “Manx Care has no concerns in terms of dentists retiring, but there is a level of concern in regard to recruitment of salaried dental positions.”
Replacements
The Minister emphasised that succession planning for private dental practices rests with contractors, while Manx Care focuses on its own services.
“There is one dental performer who has expressed a wish to retire next year and will be working with Manx Care to find a suitable replacement,” she said.
On dental waiting lists, Ms Christian referenced recent discussions in Tynwald, stating: “Manx Care are currently working with NHS dental contractors on proposals which include waiting list allocations.”
