Karen Norton is awarded the British Empire Medal for Outstanding Services to English Learning in the Isle of Man.
A former primary school teacher, specialising in supporting children with additional needs, Mrs Norton dedicated her professional life to education in both Merseyside and the Isle of Man.
Following retirement, she turned her attention to a growing local need in helping newcomers to the island overcome language barriers and feel part of the community.
In response, she founded Café Lingo, a volunteer-led initiative offering free English lessons and practical support to immigrants from around the world.
Over 500 People
Over the past eight years, Mrs Norton has dedicated more than 35 hours each week to the project, helping over 500 people from 48 different countries develop language skills, build confidence, and connect with island life.
Mrs Norton also organised cultural events, invited emergency services to speak about safety and support, and ensured that Café Lingo was a welcoming, inclusive space for all—regardless of background, language, or religion.
Under her leadership, the initiative became a vital hub for friendship, information, and opportunity.
Since 2022, Café Lingo has played a key role in welcoming Ukrainian families fleeing war, offering both practical assistance and emotional support in partnership with the One World Centre and local churches.
Though now retired, Mrs Norton continues to support Café Lingo.
She is admired for her warmth, dedication, and unwavering belief in the power of kindness and inclusion.
