The Steam Packet has warned of significant risks to its lifeline ferry services in its response to the public consultation on the Mooir Vannin offshore windfarm.
While supportive of the project, the company states it “cannot evaluate the potential outcomes of the Mooir Vannin windfarm project in isolation” as it must be considered alongside the approved Morgan wind farm in the UK sector.
Cumulatively, the projects will force the primary Douglas-Heysham route northwards, creating a shipping ‘bottleneck’.
The company said there will be a “reduction in navigable sea room leading to the potential increased risk of collision, and reduced options for weather routing capability”.
This could lead to more frequent sailing cancellations and disruptions, adversely affecting the Island’s economy.
Further concerns were raised over radar interference from the turbines and the impact on Search and Rescue operations.
