Voters will be able to use any polling station in their constituency at this year’s general election.
Chris Brannigan, Executive Director of Crown and External Relations, told Tynwald’s constitutional affairs committee that the September poll will differ from previous elections in several key respects.
“So voters can use any polling station in the constituency, for example, is an amendment since the last election,” Mr Brannigan said.
“There’s more transparency involved. So there’s more publication of candidates declarations of relevant interest have been brought through and introduced.”
The other changes include developments to the electronic register, improvements to online registration.
Mr Brannigan confirmed there will be “12 pre-election meetings, that’s one per constituency rather than one per parish”.
The last election saw criticism in some areas over the meetings that were organised due to the location of some, including Onchan which was held at the St Ninian’s Lower School site and saw poor attendance.
Chief Minister Alf Cannan said the modernising of the system “should give more people potentially the opportunity of ensuring they’re correctly registered”.
He added that the online process should allow people to “quickly and efficiently” check and update their details, which “hopefully will be the biggest advance” and could lead to “some increase in the voting numbers”.
