In Tynwald this week, Onchan MHK Julie Edge will be bringing forward a motion to establish a Select Committee on Whistleblowing.
A Select Committee made recommendations made in 2021, including independent reporting routes, annual transparency reporting to Tynwald, and a review of NDAs.
The Onchan MHK says some of these promises “remain undelivered”.
Ms Edge said: “We’ve seen, through high-profile tribunal cases and public reports, just how vital it is that people who raise concerns are protected, listened to, and not punished for doing the right thing.”
A Wake up Call
She says recent judgements, along with comments from the Tribunal Chair and independent reviewers, should be “a wake-up call for government to ensure lessons are truly learned — not just acknowledged”.
Ms Edge believes this is about doing “what’s right for those who have the courage to tell the truth, to speak up on behalf of the public”.
And about scrutiny and checking governance of policy implementation, which in Edge’s opinion “does not happen enough”.
Ms Edge said: “I am hoping my colleagues will support this motion and that together we can make the Isle of Man a place where speaking up is protected, not punished.”
